It's a BUG life

I'm totally disgusted by it. I can't even "blog" about it coherently.

Where should I even begin?

Back track to mid-Feb, less than a month we shifted in. It was during the hot and dry season that we had problems with the flying insects. Think moth and some other creepy, disgusting, irritating bugs. It was not just one or two.

Anyway, we exterminated all these creepies and bought many insect repellents. So all was well until on 2 consecutive days, we found worms crawling at the fridge area and on the kitchen bench top. We thought it was a one off thing since we were near to the trees and we usually left the windows opened, the worms might have been blown in instead.

This was when the nightmare began.

Yesterday morning, I found worms crawling around again. Freak! I investigated their trail and it linked back to my rice container.

Horror! Horror! Horror!

Our rice container was infested with them.

Horror! Horror! Horror!

Last night, we had to clear away our 7kg worth of rice, threw away the rice container. Did a thorough disinfecting job. We even found them hiding in between the gap of our hood and cabinet. Under the placemat for our water tumbler and airpot.

Horror! Horror! Horror!

So what was going on?

Speculation 1 - Rice had moisture that in turn, caused worms to thrive in there.

Speculation 2 - Moth went into our rice container and laid its eggs

After I showed the disgusting worm picture to my fellow colleagues (bear in mind, they're scientists), they identified the worm - Meal worm

I did some googling and got some information. No doubt, the worms are supposedly "clean" and in some parts of the world, people eat them as delicacy.. this is really too much for me to bear.

As one kind colleague put it, this is just a mini inconvenience of having nature close to your home.

yoz..ger..but i thought rice haf drying effect and tat is why rice is sometimes stored together with salt so that the salt will not 'lump' together becos of moisture. It is used in the salt dispenser at some restaurants.
