Parents-Teachers Conference 2015

We completed the parents-teachers conference for both boys over the past 2 weekends. This round, the teachers did not prepare any powerpoint slides nor showed us much of their class activities. Instead it was in a free-style format.

For the big boy, the Chinese teacher commented that the improvement shown was in leaps and bounds. Overall, the child has gained more confidence, whether in speech or work and even led the class in songs and dance. Even the English teacher who was only with them for 3 months, nodded her head in agreement.

His weakness in pronunciation in both English and Chinese still need to work on, pencil grip needs further improvement. The sequence of strokes in writing needed attention too. I was also told that at this stage, it was not advisable to go beyond 5 minutes of writing per session. Something for me to bear in mind as I continue my daily revision with them. I also found out that at N2 level, numeral literacy was limited to 1-20 with no input on addition or subtraction.

moving on to K1

His teachers commented he's a bright child so I shouldn't worry too much. Boy is still boy, playful is their middle name. Even a genius needs to work hard. Whether holiday season or not, our night routine still continues as not to break the momentum.

For the younger boy, the need-to-improve area was on eating. He needed teacher to feed him but had no problem in afternoon nap, changing out on his own to PM attire. During lesson, teacher noticed that he doesn't initiate participation. The teacher had to do a 1-to-1 teaching to ensure he followed through. However, English teacher commented that she had no problem with him because he recognised both upper and lower case alphabets even before she started to teach and numbers 1-20. He was also good with shapes.

The same comment as Jonathan for Chinese language - needs to speak more of the language at home. I do hope with Berries next year, I will hear lesser of this type of comments.

year end baby

At this stage, I do find some disadvantages of being a year end baby. The development milestones are still distinct in this 2-3 year old group. The biggest contrast is speech development. Boys generally develop slower than girls and he was compared to children that passed the 3 year old mark. Mental development could also see some difference as the older children are more aware of class participation, social interaction. I feel that for Matthew, he has not develop fully in his surrounding awareness to understand when he should initiate in class activities.

But in all, I think both boys have performed well for this year and we are looking at 2 more years before the big boy starts a new journey in his life.
