Spoilt Maker

Hais... after so much hype about his upcoming birthday, it didn't went well. Trouble maker is ... *drum rolls* ... yours truly.

He already knew where we were heading to for his birthday dinner when I mentioned Holland Village. Yup, we went to Foster (English Rose) for dinner. I heard Foster serves quite good dinner but things were quite different when we were there.

Starting with the ambience. Tea light, dim orange lighting. Sounded cosy? Sofa chairs and wooden tables. Sounded romantic? Settings were okay if not the waitresses and waiters were busy snacking at the bar counter. When we first arrived, the chefs in the kitchen were talking loudly in hokkien. Perhaps we went early for dinner or perhaps times were bad, business was not as brisk as before. In any case, the start was quite mood dampening. Plus Darren didn't turn up with the theme, unless you considered Polo is a British game. He came with the Polo Ralph tee I got him last year. Sigh! the same as he had worn last year. That's about -10% from the overall experience.

Next's up - the food. I had the set menu priced at $42++ while he went for ala carte. In the end, I had a chicken macroni clear soup which didn't taste good. We shared a caesar salad and that's okay.

Because of the dim lighting and I didn't managed to get the right camera mode, the pictures didn't turn up well.

That's my oven toasted beef with Yorkshire pudding with natural juice. The pudding tasted more like a prata using different flour. The beef wasn't very flavorsome too.

The only consolation we got is that his seafood pasta was at the acceptable range. The portion for seafood was generous.

After our main courses were cleared, my tea was served and then finally my dessert.

Apple strudel with vanilla ice-cream.

Bad food -30% and bad photo - 10%.

The catalyst to a catastrophic birthday was birthday boy was on the phone more than 50% of the dinner time. Calls kept coming in. First was work, then was some unknown insurance agent (which I don't understand why he bother to entertain), then were friends (gossiping about others).

So there was I, planning a trip to "Old England", dressing for the theme, yet eating the dinner in silence without his participation.

Then I just paid the bill (amounting to > $90) and he was finally done with the phone calls. Could imagine what happened next. So we fought on his birthday over this. Sigh!

It was a horrible birthday experience :(

Probably back at Foster, we should asked for more ice water.

To quench the fire that was creeping up and out from our mouths.
