Darren decided to bring me to Colbar - an unpretentious old school canteen located at Portsdown Road.

indoor dining |
Check out the kampong house with wooden furnitures. It brought about a nostalgic sense which was clearly missed in today's concrete jungle. The menu was a non-fussy folded laminated sheet which showcased their large varieties of mouth-watering dishes. We sat at the outdoor dining area which was really well ventilated with ceiling fans. The greeneries surrounding the eatery made the environment cooling despite the sun shining brightly.

simple menu |
Colbar offers western and chinese dishes, from simple side dishes like fries and sandwiches to steak and burger. There are also the regular
Zhi Char stall dishes like hor fun.
|
tomato soup |
We had tomato soup ($3.50) which was the clear broth type and even got a little surprise by finding an A in it.
|
Graded A |
Darren had hor fun ($7) which had the wok-taste and I had the fish & chips ($10).

fish & chips |
Their fish & chips are deep fried with little batter. Just enough to give the crispy feeling and the chunky potatoes wedges added more bite. Clearly absence was the regular tar tar sauce or mayonnaise. In return, they offered malt vinegar or HP sauce to go along with it.
|
crispy fish fillet |
Darren ended the meal with milk tea ($2) served in cup and saucer that seemed to come from a cosy home collection.

I would love to come back again to try other dishes and I would love to bring Jonathan and Matthew along. In fact the alfresco dining area is spacious and that's important as I have 2 strollers that always come along with us. The kids could roam around in the backyard while the adults take a break to enjoy good and reasonably priced food.
